Our Story

For over 40 years, First Service Credit Union has served the hard-working people of Greater Houston with pride. Today,we have more than $1.4 billion in assets, over 98,000 members, 16 branches, and we're still growing. Over the years, a lot has changed — membership has grown, Technology has transformed, and there have been a few name changes, along the way — but our mission has always remained the same. 1977 - Founded to Help Each Other

On November 21, 1977, fifteen employees from Brown & Root met to form Brownbuilder Federal Credit Union. Their mission was simple — help each other reach their financial goals. By December 9, 1977 the original charter was granted, and on April 3, 1978, the new credit union opened its doors to serve Brown & Root employees and family members.

Founded to help those who remembered all too well the recent financial turmoil of the 1973 oil crisis, Brownbuilder Federal Credit Union aimed to help its members and the surrounding community gain financial freedom.

1980s to 2000s - Growing to Serve You

In the 1980s and 1990s, the credit union opened several more branches throughout Houston, and we continued to expand our member base and offer more products and services. Our first ATM was installed in 1991, giving members more convenient access. As personal computers grew in popularity, we launched our first website in 1998 and introduced online banking and bill pay services to our members the next year.

At the start of the new millennium, Brownbuilder became a community-chartered credit union, which allowed us to serve even more of the Houston community. Just as we had from the beginning, we proudly stood by our members through the economic crisis of 2008 and 2009 and emerged from the downturn healthy and strong. Then, in 2010, we merged with First Service Credit Union and took on the new name as a symbol of our dedication to outstanding service.

2010s and Beyond - Dedicated to Being "For You, Not Profit"

In the years since our founding, First Service has been able to make your banking easier and more convenient through growth and technological innovation​. And most of all, we've remained committed to your financial well-being by providing a simplified financial experience with a personal touch. ​In 2022, we merged with People’s Trust Federal Credit Union and retained the First Service name. We look forward to continuing to serve our members and enhance your lives with outstanding service and valuable products.
